Must be "+ASM" not "+asm". I just tested it on my linux laptop.

The information comes from a 2-days seminar about 10g that has been written from some colleagues and I (I work for Trivadis, a company specialized in consulting and training). In fact, when a new release comes, we spend some month testing the new features and documenting not only how it should work but also how it really works! With ASM we noticed that when the instance is not called +ASM some tools, like DBCA, don't recognize it.
