Glen's answer to this one was unfortunately slightly deficient. Instead of 'never tried it', the correct response should have been "absolutely not, under no circumstances can you edit a binary dump file and expect it still to be usable afterwards".

Apart from that, I agree with everything he posted. Particularly his answer to your question 2, which explains his answer to question 3. If the data files are already pre-created by you, manually, then the fact that the dump file contains wrong paths etc. becomes irrelevant. Those bits of the dump file are just ignored at import time.
