I've managed a Documentum installation (which runs proprietary doc and keyword management with metadata in the database).

Worked ok but pain in the arse trying to keep database in sync with those bits and pieces outside the database. Also, managed with a custom query langauge called DQL ("half-documentum,half-SQL")...ugh
