You don't have to because I already have it. 9.0.1.0 client (Yes I know but I have my reasons) will talk to a 10g database, at least on windowsXP.

This may or may not be a good idea, I have seen reports that the earliest database that this client will talk to is 8.1.7.4 (yes including the patchset). Certainly unless this is a test environment this seems rather hit and hope, I'd much rather trying tracing the client and the listener and see what the traces say.
