I've had a wrong machine name next to an IP address in my /etc/hosts before now. And the right machine name against the wrong IP address. Ping always reported back just fine. It's just that it wasn't the machine returning the packets that I thought it was!

It really shouldn't, but 9i Release 1 was such an awful piece of software, I refuse to install it here to find out!

Well, that's a bit sad in a way (I never like giving up). But if it makes a difference, please report back. I suppose I could drag 9i R1 to confirm or contradict any report you make that 9i is the culprit rather than your general networking setup.
