The other answers are correct as far as they go. The next step is to ask if you are running more than one instance. If so, you also have to adjust system settings to account for multiple instances. Details vary by platform and version, you should remember to post such information with your question.

The other obvious question is why you want to do this. If you need to save the space of the binaries, you might have, um, "administration issues." If you need to run a test instance with exactly the same binaries, then it may be appropriate. If you need to test new things like Oracle upgrades, it is obviously inappropriate. If you are doing it because you have two applications, you may need to review the differences between the way Oracle defines a database and the way other software does. Some apps call a database what Oracle calls a schema.

IMO, the biggest reason for multiple databases is severely different backup/restore requirements (which usually encompasses test or training databases). More recent versions of Oracle lessen the need for this.

Then there are development databases...
