You may want to investigate Oracle Text in 9i and later (this was called interMedia Text in earlier versions). There are two (2) manuals available in 9i: a reference and application developer's guide. Ch. 17 of "Expert One-on-One Oracle" by Thomas Kyte (A-Press: 2003) focuses on interMedia text.
