Oracle 9.2 install on Shrike remembers original setup user

I attempted an install of Oracle 9.2 on RedHat Linux 9 with a user named sy on my system, and it hung. Install log not helpful. I then created the user oracle and all the groups etc. When I run the install under the oracle user, it tells me that it doesn't have access to write to /home/sy/oraInventory. This I understand - but I don't know where it is pulling that path from. I deleted that directory, then searched my machine grepping for oraInventory and I get no results. Where is Oracle storing this install path?

TIA,
