This is possible, and I have done this in the past. Usually with some minor disaster waiting for me about 3 months later.

You should be aware of ALL the possible places that Oracle may scribble, including /tmp, /var/tmp, /opt, /usr/local and (lately Linux) /etc and you need to watch your file ownerships & permissions, especially in the $ORACLE_BASE subdirectories. Especially if you are using some of the less frequented options and capabilities such as BFILE, external tables, etc.

If yo8u insist on doing this, it's worth your while to do a full system scan for anything owned by oracle or the ORADBA group.

I've found that a simple install, followed by a copy of the actual database files (including the [s]pfile, control, database, etc.) is by far the safest.
