When installing Oracle Application Server 10g (ias 9.0.4) the
installer gave errors for being unable to set permissions for certain
files supposedly installed in the jre directory, such as .system.lock,
.systemRootModFile and .extract_args.
This took some time to find but is quite silly: the CD-ROM was not compiled with the proper option (iso9660). Some too deeply nested directories where just NOT there.
The problem is solved after installing from the original download on the hard-disk. The diff command reported the following differences between the original download and the CD ROM:
