i was thinking timer that expires at the interval in which the 'progress meter' should be refreshed -- the time logic would have to be kicked off (initialized) prior to the long-running tasks, then turned off after the task completes; each timer expiration during the task would update the 'meter' and reset the timer (which as i recall is an attribute of the timer)
