Actually then surely, since you can do nothing, you may as well drink beer. Of course shortly after this becomes common knowledge you will be fired, giving more time but less cash for beer.

Dusan's comments and Paul's about stored outlines and optimizing memory use may well be relevant. Equally important may well be a discussion with your app vendor along the lines of
US: 'this process takes far too long with our data'
THEM:'oh really on our test database this works fine'
US:'sure, but do you have 85 million rows in the table?'
THEM:'er no, we do have ten rows in the table'
US:'well I suggest you reproduce on this copy of our data' (produce export
file from behind back)
US:' because that will help explain why we won't be paying your bill for the
moment'.
US:' oh btw if you changed the sql to .... or allowed me to hint the
statements you might find the bill paid quite rapidly'.
THEM:' er....Ok, btw do you listen to too much Pink Floyd?'.
