For about the third time today, have a look at my paper on installing onto Red Hat 9. Even if you don't have Red Hat 9, that paper only spends about 30 pages describing the install... the rest of it is what you do afterwards, and is largely platform-generic. If you haven't a clue where to begin, it is at least a start.
