Myth. You can have a node in standby. Not sure where the limit of clusterware is right now for different platforms. It used to be between 4 and 32. So you can give, say, each 7 nodes one standby node. Increases your hardware costs by 1/7th. (or 1/16 or 1/32). Add software, disk and other goo and that box is negligible in the grand scheme. The same, inexpensive boxes argument that works for Oracle RAC works for DB2 failover as well.
