In 8i, several new features were introduced in net8. Transparent
Application Failover, Connection manager, the option to have your
listener running on a different server, to have different listeners
for your database on different nodes etc, etc.
They all won't work using a SID.
Consequently the net8 manual tells you the SID mechanism is deprecated
and you only *must* use it for Oracle Enterprise Manager.
