I read somewhere that in some call centres in India, the operatives are actually encouraged to take on an American (or British) persona - i.e. "<Assume appropriate accent> Hi, I'm <insert English name>, how may I help you?", and if asked about personal details, to actually have a life history "I'm Marsha from Des Moines, and wasn't last night's football result <good/bad/indifferent (depends on caller locale)>?".
