No sweat. I don't know much about Russian culture! Makes sense to put suffix on surname to make it easy to spot.

I'm not sure. I've don't recall Sy saying that, but it's possible you misunderstood him or I missed it? It's a quite common thing to do with redo logs. I think Steve Adams talks about it extensively in his site, have a look:
