The DBA role always had hooks into either Dev and/or server support (ie
sys admin and app support). Commercial pressures and a belief (partly
based on reality) that databases will become more self-managing mean
that DBAs are now expected to do more in other areas. Large
organisations will continue to be an exception (ie those that have a DBA
group or DBA team).
Having moved jobs (and countries) recently and knowing a number of DBA colleagues who have moved recently, then it is apparent that many DBA jobs in the UK & Aus/NZ have asked for other skills including;
So if you have an opportunity to learn and use any of these then it pays to keep flexible as this is a growing trend.
Personally in the Tech Support arena I think it is a good thing as encouraging people to think in terms of supporting the business service is helpful - having the DBA team say it was the Unix teams issue, the Unix team say it was a Network issue and the Network team say it was a DBA issue then all of them blame the App or the Developers didn't get the problem fixed! Service support is the future role with people having specialisms IMHO.
