I have currently Oracle 8.0.5 installed with the standard Oracle Client provided with this version. I tried to use the OracleClient ADO.NET Data provider which require OraOleDb provided in version 8.1.7.3 .

Here is my current config for oracle
INVENTAIRE DE (inf02/10.0.1.52) :

  DEFAULT_HOME
    Oracle Installer 3.3.1.0.0C
Oracle TCP/IP Protocol Adapter 8.0.5.0.0     Oracle Named Pipes Protocol Adapter 8.0.5.0.0     Oracle8 Utilities 8.0.5.0.0
    Required Support Files 8.0.5.0.0
    Oracle Net8 Client 8.0.5.0.0
    SQL*Plus 8.0.5.0.0
    Oracle Net8 Assistant 8.0.5.0.0
    Oracle Documentation 8.0.5.0.0
    Oracle Objects for OLE 2.3.0.2.0

    Oracle Software Manager 1.6.0.0.0
    Oracle Call Interface 8.0.5.0.0
    Oracle8 ODBC Driver 8.0.5.0.0

    Oracle Enterprise Manager 1.6.0.0.0
Oracle Enterprise Manager Quick Tour 1.6.0.0.0     Oracle Enterprise Manager SDK 1.6.0.0.0     Oracle Administrator Toolbar 1.6.0.0.0     Oracle Enterprise Manager DB Admin Applications 1.6.0.0.0     Oracle Enterprise Manager Repository Manager 1.6.0.0.0     Oracle Migration Assistant for Microsoft Access 8.0.5.0.0     Oracle File Packager 1.0.0.1.1
Oracle Trace Collection Services 8.0.5.0.0     Java(TM) Runtime Environment 1.1.1.0.0     Oracle Web Publishing Assistant 8.0.5.0.0     Assistant Common Files 8.0.5.0.0
    Oracle8 Release Notes 8.0.5.0.0

I have dowloaded the 8.1.7.3 (Oracle 8 Realease 3) Oracle client on the Oracle web site and tried to install it on my client machine. But the installation failed raising the error "The support files required (RSF) for Oracle 8i can't be installed in a directory ORACLE_HOME that contains already 7.x or 8.0.x RSF Files".

Oracle is installed in c:\orant\ and this path only contains directories but no file. furthermore is this Oracle client compatible with a 8 (not 8i) OracleServer. I found no information about this problem on oracle site.
Could someone give me some information on the process to be able to install this client version ? Thanks in advance.
