well, the other method would involve disabling the service for the agent, rending it a non-issue. if you aren't using its functionality, don't run it.
I"m not saying "don't use the agent", I'm saying, if you are not using the functionality which is dependent upon the agent, disable it.

configuring the agent properly sounds like a good (if not better) approach.
