Yes, because of everything Daniel already said and ... because they understood the difference between data and information (information being an interpretation of a representation of data). They understood the subjective nature of information, i.e the same data may provide different information to different people. They understood that to some degree there may be intrinsic relationships between data, but that to a larger degree, the meaning of a specific data item is ultimately defined by the sum of all actions/decisions based on that data item. In other words, meaning is a function of process. No process, no meaning; even if that process is only sensation and contextualization.

I think it is a good idea to differentiate between: Information Model - Human cognitive response to mediation of the symbols Data Model - Symbolic representaion and relationship Database Model - All things concerned with access and performance.
