I hit "send" too early in last post...

Personally, I would add an where rownum = 1 condition to the view on x$dual (in addition to this inst_id check), in case there will be more than rows per instance in future releases (who knows). Or even better, just use where rownum = 1 and forget about the userenv('INSTANCE') part, this requires some CPU power as well on every execution...
