It could literally be anything. There are a lot of pieces to consider for any application:

  1. Server load/patch etc
  2. Network load, config
  3. DB load, config
  4. Application
  5. Sun flares

There are tests you can run for each piece. I'd grab the expert of each piece and have them track your session when you try to log in for starters.
