Hi,
just a few weeks go I upgraded two Oracle 8.1.7 instances following the
second trail you mentioned. It works fine, but you have to do a lot of
configuration after you migrated the database via the upgrade scripts.
You have to check for obsolete parameters in your initxxx.ora,
make sure you did the character conversion, think about converting
LONGS, activate auto_undo through undo_tablespaces, etc.
The only bad thing about migrating is that your system tablespace
will still be dictionary managed.
You should think about setting up Oracle 9iR2, apply the patches and
build up a new database. Then exp/imp the data of your old Oracle 8i
instance. Then you wouldn't have to care about reconfiguring, character
coding and things like that.
Check the Oracle 9i Database Migration documentation ( Part No.
A96530-02) to be sure and not to forget anything during migration.
