Awhile back Redhat had a "developers edition" of their advanced server(or something like that) for about $50.00, I bought it but could never get it to run ok on a compaq PIII professional workstation so I went back to my tried & true SuSE 7.3 pro desktop.

I've done installs on SuSE and Redhat, SuSE was by far the most "painless" install as it already has a lot of the gruntwork done for you ie. Oracle account already setup etc.. and the orarun.rpm does a real slick job of setting kernal params etc. if you dont like messing with them yourself (like me). SuSE also has a pretty active mailing list that often has questions like yours on it, and its free to join. SuSE also has LVM and despite it being a bit obstinate to setup sometimes, it works, I have one oracle install using it.

The trouble is, there is no downloadable iso image, but you can install it free via ftp I think, and I heard that if you dig enough there is a japanese ISO image on their ftp site, and when you go to install it you just pick english instead of the default japanese, but I cant verify this.
