Hi...

As I understand, this command takes copy of a datafile (which might have been taken using hotbackup or cold backup) and puts down into backup sets and pieces in rman format.

I don't clear see why this step would be required? If you had a copy of a file, you could better off keep it and you can recover the (corrupted) datafile faster than restoring from the backup sets.
