The more you say, the more it sounds like you're encountering this bug. Something to do with taking latches (you can read about it on metalink).

Want the bad news? The workaround I saw was "don't run statspack on affected systems" and "fixed in 9i (backported to 9.0.1"... which rather sounds like it *hasn't* been back-ported to 8.1.7.
