You've provided insuffiicient information and cross-posted it to three different groups: Two
of which are irrelevant and I have removed from my reply.

Here's what we would need to know.
1. How large a system, how many MB, GB, TB of data? 2. How large is the window during which you can do this with no one on the system?

3. Is this one one machine, changing the O/S or two?
4. Have you ever done anything like this before?
5. How well do you know UNIX and vi?

The reason I ask is my first instinct is to tell you to hire someone that has the expertise and
to make part of the contractual agreement that they teach you what you need to know.
But it might be possible for you to do this without them if the requirements are not to tight.
