Go to http://otn.oracle.com, click on 'Sample Code' button at top, look for Oracle by Example link, pull off one of the older links, look at the section to 'clean the machine', read the instructions and [intelligently] adapt for your OS. (You may have to look at several examples to find one that gives details.)

Then ignore 8.1.x and go straight to 9.2.x for your future install. Several reasons, including pending obsolescence, should drive this decision. If you REALLY need 8.1.7 compatibiility, search the 9iR2 docco for the word 'compatibiility'.
