Well, you will find a problem..The 9.2 client will not communicate with your v7 Oracle databases...( If you still have any)
As to the OP's problem, I have used the 8.0.x client to connect to a 9.2 ( needed to do exp/imp for an older 8.0.x version
from the 9.2 data)
but, your advice is sound, upgrade the client.
