Paul, I just checked metalink and they are still showing Dec. 31, 2003 for the end of regular support, ECS, on 8.1.x via note 250629.1 (1 of 2) while note 148451.1 (2 of 2) shows error correction support runs through 31-Dec-2004 and extended support through 2007.

Once again contridictory data is provided from Oracle so I am not sure what the real end support date is. I think anyone whose plans are subject to change due to this announcement should verfiy the end of ECS before chaning their plans.
