Have you checked...

  1. bbserver resolves to the correct IP addy ( try putting the IP address in tnsnames instead )
  2. there's no strange setting in sqlnet.ora that's causing you grief ( like names.default_domain )
  3. oracle _is_ running ( ps -fuoracle should show tasks like ora_lgwr_O817DB )
  4. Have you reconfigured the kernel to run Oracle? ( shared memory and semaphore resources are increased ).
