However, the bad news is, (I can say that after I attended said Oracle on Linux course), that it's mostly a reprint of the installation guide with explanations.

During the course we run into several inconsistencies (why did they choose the dba group as primary group for oracle for the practices where the installation guide suggests oinstall).

Another nice one was the fact that some practices just don't work out of the box e.g. $DISPLAY should include the hostname, else you'll run into a bug (see metalink note 174503.1) with OMS.

Seems like they did it more like a introduction to ex-windows admins.

Personally I'd expected more information, such as some configuration assistance will probably fail (at least that was our experience) if you do a softwareonly  installation, but will succeed if you included a starter DB. For the novice with Oracle/Linux it looked as if even by following the installation guide you'll be really lucky to get the darned thing running at all.

If it wasn't for the already booked hotel and stuff, I'd have walked out after the first lesson and asked my money back. (On reflection: I still should have done...)

Cheers,
Holger

PS: I should add that partly the disaster was caused by the fact that most

of the students where overwhelmed by the new 9i features, and partly
because of the instructors lack of expertise (I actually discussed the
good ole' 'separate tables and indexes for performance reasons' with him -
he was still convinced it's a good thing!) :-(
