I haven't noticed anything like you describe. So I'm unsure what you could be facing. However, if your 3rd party app wants you to introduce one extra step to upgrade, why not do it? It doesn't take that long to go 8.0.4->8.0.6->8.1.7 as it does to go 8.0.4->8.1.7. Ok...it takes twice as long. But twice of "not that mutch time" isn't that long either. And it keeps your 3rd party vendor happy should you need them to support the product. It's surely better to get the 3rd party vendor to get a better understanding of what went wrong on how to fix it, but in the end, it may be less time on your part just to do it the way that they want.
