Need or want? If Oracle says 'don't use it' I would think that alone to be sufficient.

As to why the development tream at Oracle made the decisions it did? I think you would have to have sat in our their discussions unless someone that knows wants to talk about it.

All they need to know is that Oracle is moving to drop them, the storage is less efficient than CLOB and BLOB, the perfomance is worse, and the tools such as those in the DBMS_LOB package don't exist.
