Welcome to the club. All that adrenaline is great, isn't it .... reminds me of years gone past, feeling there is soooo much to do and so little time in which to do it. Makes one forget the grey/missing hair.

Aye, there's the rub. Reality hits home. You need to think about the glibc and the associated c#^%p from now on. You have the joy of being elevated to a SysAdmin ... now all you need to do is schedule the time to do that informal job properly.

No matter what anyone says, some evangelist will knock at your door and quote chapter and verse to let you know why you need to be saved from your own damned-foolishness and switch (yet again).

You really need to decide what you want to accomplish with your system and chose the distro that meets those requirements. The pretty skin you seem to be falling for is not Linux, and will change as she gets older.

One of your 'apps' is the Oracle database so that will help you decide. We've lived with certification hassles before and in this case, the certification is at the kernel/glibc level. You just need to keep remembering it's Linux at the kernel, but GNU/KDE/Gnome and other stuff around the outside.

Note that one can remotely administer systems with X since that is pretty decent at allowing networked access. This means you can just about keep the skin you want and mix that with the appropriate brains.

In my environment, I have SuSE, Mandrake and Red Hat. Mandrake is, hands-down, my favorite for some of my hobbies (especially Lilypond.org) For a personal and business desktop, I like SuSE 8.2 for my desktop, together with OpenOffice.org to allow me a (conceptually) decent replacement to MS Office. I prefer SLES 8 for the Oracle server environment - rock solid and, since I pay for the distro SuSE provides the support. SuSE does provide a great and visible site/maillist to assist with Oracle issues and they do have recorded success with Oracle on 8.2. The RedHat Advanced Server environment is good, but I always feel like I'm in a cartoon version of Windows when I use the RH (especially RH9) desktop.

Since you have asked a question about which religion is best , expect a suitable response. My business church hangs out the SuSE banner - and brother you'll be da(*&ed if you choose anything else - not!
