Lots of people have. It's what we used to do before 8i, because it was the only way of doing it!

IE, Managed Recovery was only invented in 8i (and only, as you've discovered, for the Enterprise Edition).

Have a hunt around the Internet for any seemingly out-of-date papers on scripting a manual standby recovery (say, for versions 7 or 8), because that information (and those shell scripts) would still be viable.
