What do you mean, 'we've changed to no archive mode'?

That you switched off ARCH, or that you issued the 'alter database noarchivelog' command?

If the former, then no, you haven't changed your server mode at all. The thing is still in archivelog mode, but there's no ARCH to do the archiving. Hence the hang.
