Never seen Oracle 817 crashing when changing the SYS password. As your post doesn't contain any clues and any error message, you won't probably get any useful feedback.
But then, given your last paragraph, you just want to rant. Sql7 sucks big time of course. Oracle works. That is, if you RTFM (which people brainwashed by Microsux never do)
