Ah, now I think you might be on to something here, because your post makes it twice that I've seen reference to SNMP issues in this context.

But I confess to having given up: if I install RH8, get Oracle working on that, and then upgrade to RH9, it all works like a dream.

But I have another machine to try tomorrow, so I'll give it a whirl and see then.
