Interesting question. And one that I can't answer from my own experience - since 8iR1, I've always kept them separate in separate Oracle Homes. Most of my efforts have been around the Enterprise/Personal Edition and Standard has been a 'verify the difference' setup.

However, the Universal Installer does attempt to 'uninstall' and 'install/reinstall'. And the Standard and Enterprise Editions are [supposed to be] compatible at the datafile and control file level when going from Standard to Enterprise (but not the reverse as Standard does not understand some of the things Enterprise can do to the files and internals - such as Partitioning).

Based on this and the assumption that you have installed to learn - this is something I'd probably try out in a safe environment. Chances are it'll go OK but existing databases may not appear to convert as I suspect the config info may already be 'bound' and the SYS tables will probably not get updated. However, I'd expect new databases created with DBCA to show up properly. ....... Let's ask & wait a day for responses!

Anyone else with actual experience in this? Received on Sat Aug 09 2003 - 00:06:44 CDT
