OLTP & OLAP same instance

if hardware-resources (cpu/memory/io-bandwith) allow to do OLTP & OLAP (each with short heavy-usage-peaks, but on average low resource consumption) on the same machine, which one is better: to have one oracle-instance for both, or set up two separate instances on the same database server (9i on solaris)?
I'm just looking for rules of thumb; which are the most important factors to consider?
