Thanks for the good link and good read. It's interesting that similar questions lead to similar discussions. BTW, I only discovered asktom.com a few days ago and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

The main problem people were facing was performance in ad-hoc query. An easy solution is to have a reporting system(i.e. data warehouse, ETL) such that data is represented in user's view for ad-hoc reporting. So far we have more data than what's talked about on the link and the ad-hoc portion has native (our data warehouse, the best you can buy) speed—fast. We realized flexibility comes with a price so we had a special process to address just that.

I think as long as you know the issues with this approach and take steps to address that, you will come out ahead and win the time to market war. See, we have poor scientists and rich college dropouts. Who is the loser and who is the best is sometimes hard to say. Received on Wed Jul 30 2003 - 14:17:38 CDT
