Well, this is still true in version 8 and 9.

I think Oracle handles IOT as a heap table with Index. Or this behaviour is wrong because the table part doens't exist. For IOTs Oracle should have a distinct behaviour. It is deep in the design.

I thinks IOTs are not widely used because of this major performance problem.
