CPU capacity versus CPU performance. My often used (and very simplistic) analogy of a truck.

A 3Ghz truck can move a 10 ton load at 100km/h. A 1Ghz truck can move a 10 ton load at 80km/h. If you have 3 of these trucks, they can move a much bigger load than a single faster truck.

What do you need? A small load being moved very fast? Or do you instead want to move a very large load?

That's the basic question. Wrt Oracle, you usually are moving large loads. CPU capacity is thus one of the prime criteria.

Yes. That also means different hardware, right? Or are you refering to Solaris on Intel? If not, SPARC hardware is a very different processor than the Pentium hardware. If Intel.. well, I will suggest Windows Server instead. I do like Unix and will kill for ksh on Windows. But IMO the deciding factor is which o/s is best designed for that CPU hardware, best driver support, has a proven track record and so on. That to me is either Windows or Linux on Intel. Not Solaris.
