Thank you for the replies. I have now installed Oracle 9i by just
setting ORACLE_BASE and ORACLE_HOME. All seems well except the
installer hung at the end - I never got to see the 'End of
Installation' screen that I was expecting. At the point it hung,
someone that was connecting to an Oracle 8 database on the same
machine reported that they got a message along the lines of "no TNS
listener" (sorry, I don't have the exact message). Could the hanging
of the installation program and my colleagues error be down to the
installer trying to start the listener on port 1521, which is the same
port that the Oracle 8 listener was listening on? Also at the same
time as the installer hung, a large core file appeared in the oracle
user's home directory and the system console reported that
/export/home was full (probably due to the large core file!). I had no
choice but to kill the installer. I'm just hoping that it had in fact
finished and that the installation is OK.
Can anyone shed any light on what went wrong? Was it down to the Oracle8 listener? I want to have Oracle8 and Oracle9 running on the same machine. Do I need to have two listeners running - one for 8 and one for 9? On different ports?
There are no errors reported in the log file and the installer reports
that the following all succeeded:
Oracle Net Configuration Assistant
Oracle Database Configuration Assistant
Copying database files
Initializing database
Creating and starting oracle instance
Completing database creation
Agent Configuration Assistant
Starting HTTP Server
OS is Solaris 8 with all pre-requisites stated in the Installation Guide met.
Again, any help greatly appreciated!!
