Last time I looked at the Linux subsection on Oracle's OTN site (http://otn.oracle.com), the two main Linux distros being supported & certified for Oracle9i Release 2 are RedHat 2.1 AS and UnitedLinux 1.0 (as distributed by SuSE under SLES 8.0, and others).

On the same pages, as well as the RedHat and SuSE Oracle-related pages, you get fairly decent instructions on how to install and (most importantly) what the kernel requirements are. Also both distros have dist lists concentrating on this topic.

Since you want to hack (and there is nothing wrong with white hat hacking), I'd suggest reading the relevant docco on those sites first and possibly Googling through the cdo.server archives for discussions in the past 3 months about this very topic. I personally run my playground version on SuSE 8.2 Pro, and my main boxes on SLES 8. SuSE's online install & support suggestions are pretty decent. I've heard success stories with Debian, Mandrake.
