the issue with "RAID 1" is that it only requires 2 drives and one single channel controller to implement - and it can be implemented in software, rather than hardware. The term does not describe in detail a multitude of other factors.

"RAID 1" only denotes that the drives will be mirrored. It describes nothing about the following items:
- use of duplexing (multiplexing) across controllers

what stripe sizes will be used
(adaptive) read-ahead mechanism on volumes that support serial reads
how many controller channels and type (on how may PCI-X bus channels)
how many physical drives will be required or used
what the cache size will be on the RAID controllers
what type of write-back caching will be used
will hot-sparing will be used.
what filesystems (or none) will be used.
