Firstly thanks for those trying to help!

Ok, as everyone has guessed this is a windows environment, sorry meant to put that in. It is windows 2000 running SP2 and Oracle 8.1.7 v3 and Oracle 9iAS rel1.

I have been looking at other documentation (including metalink) and talking to Oracle them selves on this one. Still no break through on it however:

  1. I have checked the registry settings on the machine to make sure that the homes have the correct Oracle_sids specified. Comparing the affected machine to two other severs that are working, all apears correct in this part of the set up (Metalink Note: 119003.1).
  2. COmpared linstener.ora against other servers that are working and all appears ok there as well.

SID_LIST_LISTENER =
  (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
(ORACLE_HOME = c:\oracle81)
(PROGRAM = extproc)

    )
  )

3. TNSPING DB_NAME - work without any problem, both database instances

   can be pinged.

4. Recreated listner.ora. this was restarted by Oracle net8 assistant.

   Still cannot connect to DB via SQL.

OK there is the latest, I am going to run a trace on it later today and see if that returns anything. Should I be providing any further information?

Thanks.
