ORA-12560: TNS: Protocol Adapter Error

Hi,

I am getting an issue where I have created two instances on a customer server, one instance is working correctly the other instance I cannot connect to. I have tried stoping and starting both instances by windows services and still only one (the same as before) is working.

The two instances are “Demo’” and “Cust1”. In this case it is the “Demo” instance that is working and the “Cust1” one isn’t. I have tried to go via command prompt and manually stop and start the database (this is the way that I usually stop and start for I can point the instance to the correct init.ora file that I wish it to use), however when I try and go this way I constantly get: ORA-12560: TNS: Protocol Adapter Error.

Strangely this is happening for both instances when I try and do it this way.

cmd> set oracle_sid=Cust1
cmd> svrmgrl
ORA-12560: TNS: Protocol Adapter Error
Svrmgrl>

This happens for Demo as well.

This is a brand new machine that has been set up, it has Oracle standard edition 8.1.7 installed on it as well as 9iAS rel 1. Both are looking at different homes and the 9iAS is working correctly with the “Demo” instance.

One thing that is strange is that when I first set up these instances (they are identical except for the location of files and DB name), is that they both worked without any issues. I then had to restart the server and it was some time after doing this (not sure how long I was checking other things) that I noticed that the Cust1 instance was no longer working (I couldn’t connect to it any longer). As a result I stoped and started it again (Via command prompt like I can no longer do) successfully and this resolved the issue. Thinking that it was fixed I went home.

The next day I came back in only to find that once more it was not working (I am not sure if the customer at some stage restarted the server or what) but from this point onwards I have had the current issue. I cannot connect to the Cust1 instance.

Has anyone got any thoughts on what may causing this issue?
